I read fiction only about a third of the time, so like Jeff I probably can't completely fulfill the assignment. So how about my favorite fiction writers who are/were journalists first?
- Jim Lehrer writes very good fiction. Check out White Widow, for example.
- Carl Hiaasen is pure fun.
- Calvin Trillin is uniquely talented. Who could write a novel about parking?
I get a lot from books by journalists. In the non-fiction world, I have a very hard time finding a book any better than Robert MacNeil's memoir, The Right Place at the Right Time. No one on the planet writes with the grace that MacNeil does.
